POSITION DECRIPTION:

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Vice President, Human Resources is an innovative and collaborative member of the executive team.  This position champions strategies that elevate employee engagement, leadership development and organizational safety to ensure an excellent patient care experience.  The role has responsibility for Human Resources, Organizational Learning, Leadership Development, Transforming Care, Corporate Communications, Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness, Corporate Staffing, Scheduling & Payroll as well as Volunteer and Student Services.

The ideal candidate possesses expert-level Human Resources and Labour Relations practices, demonstrate forward thinking people practices and is able to design and implement scalable programs to improve employee engagement.  Coming from a background that includes Lean thinking, evidence-based leadership practices and a solid base of relevant legislative knowledge, the incumbent will champion and lead wellness initiatives, violence prevention and advance a respectful culture of inclusion, equity and diversity.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Champions the hospital’s strategic directions and fosters a culture of excellence in the delivery of all people services.
  • Leads the portfolio in accordance with STEGH’s LEAN management and evidence-based leadership systems, focusing on a culture of quality improvement and patient safety, cultivating a community of problem solvers to deliver excellent patient care experiences.
  • Evaluates and continuously implements effective tactics within talent management, the aspiring leadership program and leadership development.
  • Promotes team effectiveness by fostering conditions that enable teams to perform at their best.
  • Leads the strategies and processes to assess and improve the performance, health, safety and wellness of staff, physicians and volunteers.
  • Ensures the resolution of workplace violence, harassment and discrimination complaints with risk of broad organizational impact.
  • Measures, assesses and approves improvements, based on established key performance indicators.
  • Reviews safety and Human Resource metrics applying successful influencing strategies.
  • Nurtures and develops individual team member strengths to improve hospital practices and grow internal talent.
  • Expresses positive attitudes and expectations around corporate strategies, staff communication and recognition programs to support organizational excellence.
  • Provides operational leadership to Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness and Organizational Learning
  • Ensures the integration of appropriate technologies, upgrades and migrations.
  • Engages with contract providers to ensure value of product is maximized.
  • Leads the employee engagement survey cycle ensuring feedback is achieved across all teams.
  • Presents organizational metrics to the Board and supports the Human Resources R Committee of the Board
  • Undertakes actions to continuously improve self-knowledge and interpersonal effectiveness.
  • Leads in a results-orientated way that embodies the mission, vision and values of the hospital.

HOURS:
The successful candidate will work Monday – Friday (37.5 hours weekly) and will take rotational executive-on-call responsibilities.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • University degree in a related field, Master’s degree preferred
  • Membership in applicable professional association and/or CHE certification.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive leadership experience in an Acute Care Hospital environment
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a multi unionized environment, including collective bargaining, labour relations and alternative dispute resolution
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and sustaining a successful workplace wellness strategy
  • Experience in a Lean environment with associated Lean healthcare education preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of emotional intelligence and resiliency building strategies such as mindfulness
  • Demonstrated expertise and comprehensive knowledge in all Human Resource and organizational safety functions
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, coach and develop others during times of change
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated evidence-based decision making, critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated learning agility and commitment to professional self-development and the development of others
  • Ability to lead at strategic and operational levels across most portfolio programs
  • Flexible thinker, with an ability to quickly adapt to a changing environment
  • Experience with Huron/Studer Evidence Based Leadership Systems i.e., LEM, learning platform
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
