THE OPPORTUNITY
The Clinical Extern is an integral member of the healthcare team working in the capacity of an unregulated care provider, in the inpatient and outpatient care units at GBGH. As a Clinical Extern, you will have the opportunity to develop your clinical knowledge and skills while providing direct and indirect patient care in a mentored and supportive team environment. You will be part of the interprofessional healthcare team, supporting high quality care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience.

You will be coordinated centrally but dedicated to specific units to support a consistent work environment and promote integration into the clinical team working under the direct/indirect supervision of an Extern Coordinator. You will work part-time to a maximum of full-time hours (37.5 hours per week). The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on unit needs and may include day/evening/night and weekend shifts.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
You will be involved in providing direct care to patients and some responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):

  • Liaising with point of care nurses to identify patient care needs
  • Acting as a resource to the interprofessional team where needed for patient care tasks, supplies, equipment, transportation
  • Assisting with personal hygiene care, patient positioning and transfers
  • Assisting with patient ambulation, toileting and with meals including feeding
  • Assisting with patient and family communication
  • Assisting with head-to-toe assessments and vital signs
  • Promoting patient safety through falls risk and skin assessments
  • Other duties as assigned to support the care team

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:

  • Currently enrolled in one of the following programs: Registered Nurse (RN) students enrolled in an accredited baccalaureate nursing programs; Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) student enrolled in an accredited nursing program; Undergraduate Medical Student in final year of a program or recent Canadian Medical Graduates awaiting start or residency; Respiratory Therapy Students in 2nd or 3rd year of study in a Diploma program; Paramedic Students in an approved paramedic program (2nd year of study); Occupational Therapy Students; or Physiotherapy Students
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
  • Proven ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection control practices
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills with proven ability to take initiative
  • Ability to work all shifts as necessary
  • Provide assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating as per policy
  • Demonstrated consistent punctuality and attendance record, maintaining a high level of reliability and commitment to performing duties with efficiency and effectiveness in previous roles
  • Excellent clinical, decision making and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt to change in a fast-paced working environment
  • Commitment to GBGH Values and Purpose Statement
  • As a partially designated French speaking organization, French verbal and written communication skills are considered an asset in this position
